About this course

In this course we’ll explore how and why you might want to change key in your composition and I’ll show you how to do it with clear examples, explanations and practical tasks. By the end of this course you will have learned a significant compositional technique and be confident in moving from one key to another.

This course is aimed at GCSE (or equivalent; 14-16 years) and A level (or equivalent 16-18 years) students.

Course Summary

In this course you will:

  • Learn to modulate to the four ‘basic’ keys
  • Explore a further eight keys
  • Discover how to travel to more remote and unusual keys
  • Listen to clear musical examples of each modulation
  • Use a pivot chord to change key smoothly
  • Explore the ‘Circle of Fifths’
  • Learn to adjust the melody to fit the new key
  • Modulate via falling and rising sequence
  • Try each key change using a practical exercise
